Is tissue grafting helpful in treating Peyronie’s disease?
There are various ways with the help of which a disease like Peyronie can be treated. Surgeries or tissue grafting is one such way which can be used by patients who are not too keen on losing the actual size of their penis because of the problem. The surgical procedures are done with an intention to enhance the strength of the penis and to bring it back into its original size and shape.
Surgeries are advised by doctors to men who suffer from majorly damaged penis both in terms of size and in shape. The defective parts of the penis are interchanged or grafted with some other material. There are various materials or processes which are used in grafting the damaged tissues. The most commonly used medium is to take tissues from some other part of the patient’s body. This is known as Autograft, as is quite helpful in minimizing the compatibility factor of the grafted tissue with the body as being from the patients own body, there is a very rare chance the body will not accept the graft.
There are certain artificial materials such as Dacron mesh and Gore – Tex which are used as grafting materials. The downside of using these artificial materials is that they cause formation of excess tissues on the penis and may also lead to scars. Xenograft is a technique which is also used by various doctors. This entails use of tissues of other humans or animals. These tissues are quite freely available but there might be cases that a patient’s body might reject these tissues due to non compatibility.
Another disadvantage of tissue grafting is that at some point or the other the grafts face contraction which results in decrease in the size of the penis and leaves permanent scars. It is always advisable to measure the pros and cons of these grafting surgeries before actually undergoing one. The last alternative of treating or combating the disease is a penis implant. These penis implants were quite in favor for many medical practitioners earlier, but with the advent of technology and use of various new techniques implants have lost their preference over other methods.
Moreover, these implants are still advised or considered an ideal alternative solution for patients on whom other techniques and medications are not able to bring out the desired results.
