Threats to Male Fertility
In order to carry out a successful conception and to give birth to a child, both women as well as men have to be in a healthy state. Even after repeated attempts to conceive for a year, if a couple fails to do so, then they might be facing some infertility problems. As per a research conducted, this problem of infertility affects almost 10% (or around 6.1 million) Americans. Many strongly believe a myth that infertility is always a women’s problem, which is not true. Almost in about 35% of the cases, the root cause is due to male infertility factors.
There can be various reasons for infertility in men such as ejaculation problems, low sperm count (or even nothing at all), or abnormal sperm, which is known to be malformed and have quite a short life span. Usually the fertility factor is based on once health. If you keep up with a healthy routine and lifestyle, there are higher chances that even your sperm will be healthy. Some of the threats that may hinder the male fertility are Alcohol, Nicotine, and drugs (e.g., marijuana and cocaine). As such there are many factors, but these top the lists. As per studies, excessive smoking decreases the sperm count and even the overall health of sperm cells.
Even the diet you consume can be a potential threat to your sperm health. Poor diet (malnutrition) including deficiency of zinc and vitamin C in the diet can be harmful. Some of the diseases such as anemia, normal fever, tuberculosis, mumps in adulthood, and various infections can also be suspects. Apart from these, some diseases that are sexually transmitted such as gonorrhea or Chlamydia can also damage the spermatic ducts.
Some of the medications are also known to cause the male infertility. These includes anti-fungal medication (ketoconazole),, cancer-treating agents (e.g. chemotheraphy), Azulfidine (a drug used to treat ulcerative colitis), antidiarrheal drug (sulfasalazine), and some groups of antibiotics (macrolides and nitrofurans). Similarly, the use of some anabolic steroids is also known to induce infertility and testicular shrinkage. Some other threats to fertility of males include trauma or injury to the testes, testosterone deficiency, blockage in the vas deferens or structural abnormality, and varicocele.
Apart from all these causes, some of them are also related to the type of lifestyle you live. Such factors include overly intense exercise, excessive stress, jogging pants or tight underwear, saunas, hot tubs, or anything which increases the temperature of your scrotum.
